The idea to sail British Virgin Islands first caught our interest when we asked our sailing instructor in Galveston, Texas about his favorite sailing destination during our lessons.
Without hesitation, he described the BVI’s scenery and calm waters as his #1 recommendation.
What makes the BVI so perfect for sailing? Its protected waters are sheltered from large ocean swells by surrounding reefs and land formations, and steady trade winds (typically 10-20 knots) provide ideal conditions.

The islands are also perfectly spaced, with short passages between them, so you’re never far from your next idyllic anchorage.
Whether you’re tacking along the Sir Francis Drake Channel or mooring in a safe and scenic spot, the sailing experience is as easygoing as it is beautiful.
It’s as if Mother Nature herself designed this Caribbean wonderland specifically for new sailors seeking adventure without the stress.
Although we haven’t sailed there yet, it immediately secured a top spot on our bucket list—read on to see if you feel the same!

The Best Times for Sailing the British Virgin Islands
The best time to sail the British Virgin Islands is from December to April, when steady trade winds of 15-20 knots, warm temperatures, and dry conditions create ideal conditions.
The shoulder seasons of May to July and October to November also offer great weather, lighter winds, and fewer crowds, making for a more peaceful experience. Charter rates may also be lower during these months.
Please note: We’re not including June to November in this post, as this falls within hurricane season. Planning your trip outside this timeframe is best for a stress-free and enjoyable sailing adventure.
However, if you choose to sail British Virgin Islands during hurricane season, ensure adequate sailing experience and a plan for foul weather. Our personal best plan is to avoid hurricane season altogether.

1. Documentation and Entry Requirements
- Passports and Visas: All visitors, including U.S. citizens, must show a valid passport upon entering the BVI. Ensure your passport is valid for at least six months beyond your planned entry date. Depending on your nationality, a visa might also be required. Verify visa requirements before your trip.
- Customs and Immigration: Upon arrival by sea, all vessels must promptly clear in with BVI Customs and Immigration at designated ports of entry, such as Road Town (Tortola), West End (Tortola), Great Harbour (Jost Van Dyke), and Spanish Town (Virgin Gorda). Ensure you have all necessary documentation, including valid passports and boat registration papers. Click here for another helpful link regarding BVI customs.
2. Sailing Permits and Licenses

- National Marine Park Permit (also mentioned earlier): This permit allows access to designated mooring buoys and protects marine ecosystems.
3. Operational Restrictions
- Night Sailing: Operating a vessel after sunset without prior authorization is generally prohibited. If you anticipate the need for night sailing, obtain explicit permission from your charter base manager, as approval is contingent upon your experience and specific circumstances.
- Crew Requirements: Charter companies typically require a minimum of two qualified individuals aboard to ensure safe vessel operation. Solo sailing is generally not permitted.
4. Environmental Considerations
- Fishing Permits: A valid fishing permit is required for any fishing activities in BVI waters. These permits can be obtained through the BVI Department of Conservation and Fisheries.
- Waste Disposal: Adhere to local regulations regarding waste disposal to maintain the pristine marine environment. Dispose of trash responsibly and utilize pump-out facilities for sewage when available.
Before setting sail, consult your charter company for additional requirements or updates.
